On December 22, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day brings together the international community to emphasize the need for gender equality in science to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Since then, with events organized worldwide every year, this International Day celebrates the outstanding contributions of women in science while raising awareness that science and gender equality must advance hand in hand to address major global challenges.
In 2025, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
